Tanush Kotian Added to India Squad as Shami Ruled Unfit for BGT 2024-2025

Tanush Kotian, Mumbai’s offspinning all-rounder, is set to join the Indian men’s team in Australia for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This comes after Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket following the third Test in Brisbane.

The 26-year-old Kotian, currently playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, will fly to Melbourne ahead of the third Test. He is currently in Ahmedabad and will first return to Mumbai before heading to Melbourne on Tuesday. Having recently been part of the India A squad in Australia, Kotian is expected to face no visa issues.

Kotian boasts an impressive record in 33 first-class matches, amassing 1525 runs at an average of 41.21 and taking 101 wickets at 25.70. He was named Player of the Tournament in Mumbai’s victorious 2023-24 Ranji Trophy campaign, where he scored 502 runs at an average of 41.83 and claimed 29 wickets at an average of 16.96.

    Shami Declared Unfit for Selection

In contrast, Mohammed Shami’s anticipated return to the national side has been delayed as the BCCI Medical Staff declared him unfit for the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite his return to competitive cricket, Shami has not been cleared by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The BCCI confirmed that Shami has experienced minor swelling in his left knee due to the bowling workload since his extended absence. While this is considered a minor issue, it means Shami is not yet ready for international cricket.

The 34-year-old’s recovery began with Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in November, where he bowled 43 overs without issues. He also played all of Bengal’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games, with the BCCI Medical Team closely monitoring his progress. However, the recent knee swelling means Shami will need more time to complete his rehabilitation.

Shami was also rested from Bengal’s first Vijay Hazare Trophy game as a precaution, and his participation in the tournament will now depend on his rehab progress. The BCCI Medical Team continues to manage his workload as he works towards a timely return to the national team.

How Can India Qualify For WTC Final After 3rd Australia Test Ends In Draw

The Indian cricket team’s path to the World Test Championship (WTC) Final became more complicated after their third Test against Australia ended in a draw in Brisbane on Wednesday. The match, plagued by rain delays and bad light, was called off just after the final session on Day 5, with both captains and the umpires agreeing to end the game. This result has made India’s route to the WTC Final more challenging, as South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Australia are also in the race for qualification.

India’s chances of reaching the WTC Final are still alive, but their task is tough. If India wins both of their remaining matches, they will secure their place in the Final, regardless of the outcomes of other series. A 2-1 series win for India would still see them qualify, provided Sri Lanka beats Australia 1-0 or the series ends in a 1-1 draw.

However, if the series ends 2-2, with both India and Australia winning one match each in the upcoming encounters, the situation becomes more complicated. In this case, Sri Lanka would need to win their series against Australia 2-0 to help India’s cause, assuming Pakistan loses at least one Test against South Africa. If India and Australia finish the series 2-2, and Australia wins both of their matches against Sri Lanka, India can still qualify if Pakistan defeats South Africa 2-0.

The rain-affected third Test ended with India at 8/0 in their chase of 275, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) and KL Rahul (4) at the crease when bad light and rain forced an early tea break. Australia had declared their second innings at 89/7, giving India just over one session to chase the target.

Jasprit Bumrah was India’s standout bowler, taking 3/18 in six overs, supported well by Mohammed Siraj (2/35 in 7 overs) and Akash Deep (2/28). Captain Pat Cummins surprised everyone by declaring the innings after the 18th over, sensing that a result was still possible with more than 50 overs remaining in the final session.

Earlier, India had been bowled out for 260 in response to Australia’s 445. Resuming the day at 252/9, India added just 8 runs in 24 balls, with Akash Deep being stumped off Travis Head’s bowling in the 79th over, giving Australia a commanding 185-run lead.

WTC 2023-25 Points Table: Sri Lanka and Rain Disrupt India’s Calculations… This Is the Last Chance for the World Test Championship Final

The Sri Lankan cricket team has disrupted India’s calculations in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) by thrashing New Zealand in the Test series. Rain has also played a significant role in complicating India’s situation. The ongoing Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur is on the verge of being washed out due to rain.

If this match is indeed washed out, as seems likely, India’s chances will be jeopardized. First, let’s discuss the two-match Test series, where Sri Lanka has completed a clean sweep over New Zealand, winning 2-0. Following this defeat, New Zealand has slipped from fourth to seventh place in the WTC points table.

Sri Lanka Rises to Third Place
Now, New Zealand is at risk of being eliminated from the WTC final race. The team has a win percentage of 37.50 from 8 matches, with 4 wins and 4 losses, placing them seventh in the table. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has reached third place with a win percentage of 55.55 after their fifth win in 9 Tests.

Sri Lanka will now play two Tests during their tour of South Africa, followed by a home Test series against Australia. If Sri Lanka wins both series, they could secure a place in the WTC final, which could pose a threat to the currently top-ranked Indian team.

Meanwhile, the Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur is also at risk of being washed out due to rain. In the first three days of the match, only 35 overs have been played, with Bangladesh scoring 107 runs for 3 wickets. Even if the last two days see full play, achieving a result seems unlikely, raising concerns about the match being abandoned.

The Last Chance for India to Reach the Final
Currently, the Indian team sits at the top of the WTC points table with a win percentage of 71.67. Australia follows in second place with a win percentage of 62.50. Amid Sri Lanka’s consecutive victories and the potential abandonment of the Kanpur Test, India’s path to the WTC final now hinges on one crucial requirement.

After the Kanpur Test, India has only 8 matches left in this WTC cycle from 2023-25. To secure a place in the final, India must win at least 5 out of these 8 matches. If they achieve this, they will not need to rely on the results of other teams and can confirm their spot in the final.

It’s worth noting that India’s next 8 matches will be against New Zealand and Australia. This includes a three-match home Test series against New Zealand and a five-match Test series against Australia on their home ground.
