When Rohit Sharma took over Team India’s Captaincy from Virat Kohli, he had 4 major tournaments in front of him – Asia Cup 2022, T20 WC 2022, World Test Champion (WTC), and Cricket World Cup 2023. However, he failed to take his team over the line in the Asia Cup and got eliminated from the T20 WC after losing to England in the Semi Final by 10 wickets!

Rohit Sharma is now expected to lead Team India till the end of the current cycle of WTC in Test Cricket, and till the end of the Cricket World Cup 2023 in ODIs. But the question is, ‘Who will lead Team India after that’?

Talking on this matter, a Senior BCCI Official recently said, “Right now, Rohit is the man to lead India in the World Cup this year but we must plan about what next. Just can’t wait for things to happen and then react. Just in case Rohit decides to let go of the ODI format or captaincy post the 2023 World Cup, we need to have a plan in place”.

“Hardik is doing well as captain. He is young and will only get better. For now, there is no better option than him to be looked at post Rohit. He must be backed and given a long and consistent rope,” added the official.

Hardik had an excellent start to his T20 captaincy career. After leading Gujarat Titans to IPL glory, Hardik led India to series wins in Ireland, New Zealand and now against Sri Lanka. Hence, its almost clear that he is in the frontline to lead Team India’s White-Ball team on a permanent basis after Rohit Sharma’s exit as ODI Captain.
