Tilak Varma’s entry into international cricket has been nothing short of impressive, showcasing his class and skill in just three matches. The highly regarded batsman earned his debut selection for Team India during the ongoing T20I series against West Indies, and he has made an immediate impact.
Within three matches, he has emerged as the leading run-scorer in the series, outshining prominent names like Nicholas Pooran, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill, among others. With 139 runs to his name at an average of 69.50 and a striking strike rate of 139, Tilak Varma has been a standout performer. He made his international debut in style, smashing consecutive sixes and notching a top-score of 39.
In the second game, he once again demonstrated his prowess with a remarkable innings of 51 runs, emerging as India’s top scorer. The third T20I showcased his remarkable maturity as he steered the team to victory in a crucial encounter, finishing unbeaten on 49 runs. His efforts contributed to India’s resounding seven-wicket win over West Indies, ensuring the series remains competitive.
Tilak Varma’s growing reputation as one of India’s most promising young talents has led former India wicketkeeper and chief selector MSK Prasad to assert that the left-hander is prepared to excel in the ODI format as well. In light of Shreyas Iyer’s ongoing absence due to a back injury, Prasad suggests that Tilak Varma could step in should the middle-order batsman’s recovery be delayed.

Prasad highlighted the young batsman’s impressive List A record, particularly his remarkable conversion rate. Tilak Varma has amassed 1236 runs in 25 List A innings, boasting an outstanding average of 56.18 and an impressive strike rate of 101.64. His tally includes five centuries and fifties each, with an impressive highest score of 156 not out. Moreover, he has cleared the boundary ropes 48 times with sixes in these 25 List A innings.
“When you look at his List A record for Hyderabad, he has played 25 List A matches with an average of over 55, five centuries, and five half-centuries. This indicates that he is converting fifties into hundreds at least 50 percent of the time. Coupled with a strike rate of over 100,” Prasad stated in a conversation with PTI.
Prasad expressed that considering Shreyas Iyer’s situation, Tilak Varma could be a viable option if needed. He further emphasized that Tilak Varma is likely to become a consistent presence for India across various formats.
Tilak Varma’s goal is to conclude the series on a high note by delivering strong performances in the remaining two matches. As the announcement for the Asia Cup squad awaits, he stands a chance of earning a spot if Shreyas Iyer’s recovery remains uncertain.
