Tilak Varma to Pip Shreyas Iyer for Number 4 Slot in World Cup 2023

Captain Rohit Sharma is full of praise for Tilak Verma, particularly as he also captains Mumbai Indians and has observed Verma's batting approach closely.

Tilak Verma has consistently caught the attention of the cricket community, both in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the T20 series against West Indies. Despite the batting order struggling against the strong West Indies bowlers, Verma remained resilient and delivered outstanding performances in all three T20 matches up until now. His remarkable showing sparked discussions within the team, with figures like Ravichandran Ashwin advocating for his inclusion in the ODI World Cup 2023 team.

It’s improbable that the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar will opt for young Tilak Verma. However, given India’s performance in a World Cup year, there’s a pressing need to consider unconventional choices. Even though West Indies didn’t qualify for the World Cup, we faced difficulties against them in both ODI and T20 matches.

Captain Rohit Sharma is full of praise for Tilak Verma, particularly as he also captains Mumbai Indians and has observed Verma’s batting approach closely. Sharma mentioned that Verma possesses a deep understanding of his batting, knowing when and where to make impactful hits. The captain affirmed Verma’s undeniable talent, showcased in the matches he has played for India.

“He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got hunger, and that is the most important thing,” Rohit said. “In him, I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite mature. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period.”

“That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” he added.
