Beginning his county cricket journey in 2008, Wood had his debut for Northumberland against Norfolk in the MCCA Knockout Trophy. His stint in Minor counties cricket extended from 2008 to 2010, during which he made three appearances in the Minor Counties Championship and three in the MCCA Knockout Trophy.
The transition to Durham occurred in the 2011 season, where he marked his first-class debut against Durham MCCU and his List A debut against Northamptonshire in the 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40.
