The countdown has begun for the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), set to kick off on March 31st, and all teams are gearing up for the much-awaited tournament. With the recent news of Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain, Shreyas Iyer, being ruled out of the ODI series against Australia due to a back problem, the team is left in a tough spot. If Iyer’s injury persists and he is unable to participate in IPL 2023, KKR will need to find a replacement and name a new captain.

Here, we explore three players who could potentially fill the captaincy void for KKR.

    1) Nitish Rana

Nitish Rana, a skilled player for KKR with an aggressive batting style and off-spinning capabilities. He has been a vital player in Kolkata Knight Riders’ batting line-up since 2018. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he has scored a total of 2,181 runs in 91 games, with a remarkable strike rate of 134.22, which also includes 15 half-centuries. In addition to his impressive batting skills, Rana is also a part-time off-spin bowler, making him a valuable all-rounder for KKR. Moreover, Rana is not a stranger to leadership roles, having captained Delhi’s state team in the domestic cricket circuit. His experience as a leader can prove to be beneficial if he is given the responsibility of captaining KKR, especially if regular skipper Shreyas Iyer is unavailable for IPL 2023.

    2) Andre Russell

Andre Russell is a highly talented cricketer who is well-known for his prowess in power-hitting, bowling, and fielding. Along with his outstanding skills on the field, he has also demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities in the past. Russell is often seen motivating and inspiring his team members both on and off the field, which makes him a valuable asset for any team he plays for. His contagious energy and good attitude can greatly impact the team’s performance and keep them motivated and focused throughout the tournament. With his proactive nature and prior experience, Russell could prove to be an effective captain for KKR.

    3) Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan, the current T20I captain of Bangladesh, is a potential backup skipper for KKR. Despite not being a regular in the team, he has performed reasonably well in the IPL. In his 71 appearances, he has amassed 793 runs at a strike rate of 124.49, with 63 wickets at an average of 29.19. He also led Bangladesh to a convincing 3-0 victory over England in the recent home T20I series. With his experience leading teams and being one of cricket’s most productive all-rounders in recent years, KKR could look to Shakib Al Hasan to step up and lead the team in Iyer’s absence.
