IPL 2023 | RR vs RCB: Winning IPL title won’t necessarily help Sanju Samson’s case for Indian team selection, says Former Selector

Former India selector Sarandeep Singh believes only consistent performances, not IPL success, will lead to national team call-up for Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson.

Former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh has recently spoken up about Sanju Samson’s selection in the Indian cricket team, stating that he failed to perform consistently in the shorter format when he got a chance to represent the national team. Singh believes that winning the IPL trophy as captain will not help Samson get a chance in the Indian team.

Sanju

The Rajasthan Royals skipper has been in decent form in the ongoing edition of IPL 2023. With 159 runs at an average of 26.5 and a strike rate of 160.61, Samson has been impressive in his leadership role this season, leading his team to the top of the points table with 8 points and a healthy Net Run Rate of +1.043.

However, according to Singh, Sanju Samson was not able to make a mark during his previous chances in the Indian team. Although he performed well in ODIs, there were other wicketkeeper-batters who performed well during the same time, such as Ishan Kishan’s double century against Bangladesh.

Singh emphasized that performance is the only criterion for selection in the Indian team, and winning the IPL title is important but not necessary to get picked. “If you’re scoring 700-800 runs in an IPL season, you will definitely get picked. Yes, winning the IPL title is important, but only performances can get you picked,” he stated.

Samson

Sanju Samson will have a chance to showcase his skills in the upcoming match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 23. Despite being in a good form, he will need to continue his consistent performances to earn a spot in the Indian team.
