Sunil Gavaskar’s Bold Statement on Team India, Says “Winning series against weak teams like West Indies will not help India”

Former Indian cricket legend criticizes India's performance in the WTC final, emphasizes the need to rectify mistakes against top teams like Australia instead of relying on victories against weaker opponents.

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar didn’t hold back his disappointment and frustration following India’s lackluster performance in the World Test Championship final against Australia. Gavaskar minced no words as he criticized the team’s poor display, highlighting batting collapses, bowling inefficiencies, dropped catches, and questionable selection of the playing XI. He called for a thorough analysis and swift improvements.

In a bold statement, Gavaskar dismissed the notion that winning bilateral series against teams like West Indies would suffice. He stressed the imperative need for the team to rectify their mistakes and shortcomings, particularly in crucial matches against top-tier teams like Australia. Merely dominating weaker opponents while repeating the same errors in critical finals was deemed futile and detrimental to India’s aspirations for global success.

Gavaskar had previously taken aim at Virat Kohli, India’s former captain, for his poor shot selection during the WTC final. He singled out Kohli’s dismissal, highlighting an ordinary cover drive attempt against Scott Boland that resulted in his downfall. Gavaskar described the shot as subpar, occurring far outside the off stump, and suggested that Kohli’s eagerness to reach his half-century milestone may have clouded his judgment.

It’s a call for the team to learn from their mistakes, address their weaknesses, and exhibit the mental fortitude required to succeed in high-pressure situations against top-quality opposition.
