Michael Atherton, former English cricketer, shed light on the contrasting leadership styles of Ben Stokes and Pat Cummins in the ongoing first Test of the Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston. According to Atherton, this difference marks a fundamental shift in their approaches.
Winning the toss, England chose to bat first in the first Test against Australia and displayed an aggressive mindset against the formidable Australian bowling attack. However, Atherton observed that Pat Cummins’ fielding placements lacked the required pressure on the opposition.
Cummins opted for defensive fields, allowing the English batsmen to easily score singles and doubles even on poorly bowled deliveries. England managed to accumulate a formidable total of 393 runs before Ben Stokes surprised everyone with a declaration. However, Stokes demonstrated astute fielding placements following the declaration.

Atherton noted that Stokes’ field placements kept the Australian batsmen on their toes, resulting in England gaining an advantage and taking three quick wickets at Edgbaston.
In contrast, Atherton pointed out that Cummins’ field changes and bowling alterations were primarily focused on restricting runs rather than actively seeking wickets. During an interview with Sky Sports, Atherton expressed, “Every field change, every bowling change from Stokes is about how to get a wicket. Every change from Cummins yesterday was about how to stop runs. It’s a fundamental shift.”
The contrasting leadership styles of Stokes and Cummins have played a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the ongoing Test match. Stokes’ wicket-oriented approach has proven fruitful for England, while Cummins’ defensive tactics have allowed the English batsmen to accumulate runs with ease.
