Following India’s disappointing loss to Australia in the World Test Championship final at The Oval, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has raised concerns about the lack of accountability within Indian cricket. Despite the team’s dismal performance, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was not subjected to any consequences or discussions about his future.

Australia secured a convincing victory, defeating India by 209 runs on Day 5 of the match. Gavaskar believes that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors should have engaged in a dialogue with Rohit regarding his role going forward.

Expressing his disappointment, Gavaskar stated, “There is no accountability in Indian cricket. There should have been a meeting. In our days, a meeting was conducted to appoint the captain, and then, two days later, he was involved in the selection process of other players.”

Gavaskar further criticized the trend of Indian captains not being removed from their positions despite a series of poor performances. He observed that this has been a recurring issue for the past decade or so. Individual performances, according to Gavaskar, seem to hold more significance than captaincy itself. If a captain delivers exceptional performances with the bat or ball, their position is secure even if the team continues to face defeats.

The former cricketer’s comments shed light on the need for a more comprehensive approach to captaincy in Indian cricket. Holding captains accountable for team results and conducting evaluations based on performance rather than individual brilliance could help drive positive change within the team.

As India looks ahead to future cricketing challenges, it remains to be seen whether the BCCI and selectors will address these concerns and take steps towards establishing a system that emphasizes accountability and fosters a culture of consistent performance on the field.
