Former Australian pacer, Jason Gillespie, believes that Australia should include Mitchell Starc in the playing XI for the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, starting on June 28. With Australia leading the series 1-0 after their two-wicket victory in the first Test, Gillespie feels that adding Starc to the lineup could strengthen their chances of securing a 2-0 lead.
Gillespie suggests that Australia should consider making one or two changes to the team. One option is to bring in Starc as a rotational policy, replacing Cameron Green. Gillespie highlights the importance of managing the bowlers’ workload and keeping them fresh.
“In addition to the rotational policy, Australia may consider Mitchell Marsh as an alternative all-rounder if Cameron Green is not fit and able to bowl,” wrote Gillespie in his column for the Daily Mail.

Furthermore, Gillespie mentions another potential option of replacing Josh Hazlewood with Starc, although he acknowledges Hazlewood’s impressive performance in the first innings of the previous Test. Despite Starc being relatively expensive in recent times, Gillespie believes that Australia could benefit from his attacking bowling style and ability to swing the ball and deliver yorkers.
Gillespie emphasizes that if Australia employs similar field settings as they did on the opening day of the series, with defensive field placements, Starc could thrive with added protection. His attacking approach and ability to pitch the ball up further than his Test rivals make him a valuable asset for the team.
The second Test will take place at Lord’s from June 28 to July 2, followed by the third Test at Headingley from July 6 to 10. The series will conclude with matches in Manchester (July 19-23) and The Oval (July 27-31).
