The ODI World Cup in India is scheduled to commence on October 5, and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has shared a significant update on his injury recovery ahead of the tournament. Williamson sustained the injury during the opening match of IPL 2023 while playing for the Gujarat Titans against the Chennai Super Kings. After returning home, he was initially ruled out of the World Cup. However, Williamson remains hopeful and is taking a cautious approach, monitoring his progress on a week-to-week basis.
“I’m currently focusing on taking it week by week. This is the first time I’ve had a long-term injury, but talking to others who have experienced it, I understand that the journey can be quite lengthy. If you look too far ahead, it can become overwhelming,” Williamson stated, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
Kane Williamson played a crucial role in New Zealand’s journey to the final of the 2015 World Cup as a player and the 2019 World Cup as captain. Unfortunately, the Kiwis lost the final on the boundary count rule against England in 2019. With the upcoming ODI World Cup potentially being his final major event in the 50-over format, Williamson is eager to make an appearance.

“Instead of looking too far ahead, I prefer focusing on achieving small milestones and celebrating the little victories along the way. I understand that the journey may not be entirely smooth, and there might be setbacks that I need to overcome. It’s essential for my mental well-being to mix things up and spend time with other players during gym sessions, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation work. I’m particularly excited to get back into the nets,” the former New Zealand skipper added.
