According to reports, former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar is leading the race to become the next Chief Selector for the Indian cricket team. Agarkar’s extensive experience and deep understanding of the game make him a strong contender for the position.
Ajit Agarkar is on the verge of being appointed as the next chief selector, a role that has been vacant since the surprising departure of Chetan Sharma in February 2023 following a sting investigation.
On July 1, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will conduct interviews with the shortlisted candidates to oversee the selection committee for the upcoming West Indies tour. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently advertised the qualifications for this position. The CAC will carefully evaluate all candidates before selecting a qualified individual to lead the selection committee. The upcoming West Indies tour holds great significance, and assembling a well-balanced and capable team is crucial.
The document outlines the roles, responsibilities, eligibility requirements, and the submission deadline (June 30). Shiv Sunder Das, a former batsman who was responsible for selecting the Test and ODI squads for the upcoming Caribbean series, is currently serving as the interim chairman of the selection committee. A BCCI representative informed PTI, “The CAC has been entrusted with the task of choosing a selector who can assert himself in case of any differences with the high-profile team management.”

Reports suggest that Ajit Agarkar is a strong candidate for the position of head selector of the Indian cricket team. Agarkar, a former Indian cricketer, had an illustrious career and enjoys a respected status within the cricketing community.
Having represented India in all three formats of the game, Ajit Agarkar brings a wealth of experience to the table. He was also part of the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa. Agarkar has previously been associated with the role of chief selector and may soon be appointed to the position. Following his retirement, he ventured into broadcasting and currently serves as an assistant coach for the Delhi Capitals (DC).
However, the final decision lies with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and other relevant authorities. They will consider various factors before naming the next chief selector.
