Ashes 2023: Nathan Lyon’s Calf Injury Dealt a Crushing Blow to Australia’s Ashes Campaign

Star Spinner's Absence Raises Concerns as Australia's Hopes Hang in the Balance

Australia’s hopes in the Ashes 2023 series took a massive blow as their star spinner, Nathan Lyon, suffered a calf injury during the second Test at Lord’s. Lyon had been bowling exceptionally well, troubling the batters with impeccable lines and lengths, particularly when bowling around the wicket.

Ashes 2023: Nathan Lyon's Calf Injury Dealt a Crushing Blow to Australia's Ashes Campaign

In the afternoon session, Lyon was seen limping off the field after attempting to take a catch at the deep boundary, but falling short. He was in severe pain, and the team physio rushed onto the ground to assess him before he was eventually taken off.

Lyon’s absence will be deeply felt by the Australian team, as he has been an integral part of their success. It is worth noting that Lyon played a crucial role in the match-winning partnership with captain Pat Cummins during the first Test.

Cricket Australia provided an update on Lyon’s injury via Twitter, confirming that he had suffered a calf injury and would undergo further assessment after the second day’s play.

During the commentary on Sky Sports, Nasser Hussain emphasized Lyon’s importance to the team’s success and expressed concern about the injury.

“This doesn’t look good. This could be a significant moment in the Test match, in the series. He’s a key figure in this attack, pivotal to their success. It’s really an awful sight, and you can see from Lyon’s face the seriousness of it,” commented Nasser Hussain.

Andrew Strauss, also commentating, echoed the sentiment, stating that Lyon’s injury was a bad sign for the Australian team.

“That is not a good sign if you’re an Australian supporter. That is really hard to watch,” added Andrew Strauss.
