Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has expressed his reservations regarding the decision of the national selectors to appoint Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain for the upcoming two-Test tour of West Indies. The concerns primarily arose due to doubts over Rohit Sharma’s fitness and a lack of alternative options, leading to Rahane being chosen as the deputy.
The fitness of Rohit Sharma has been a topic of debate, and the selection committee, led by Shiv Sundar Das, believed it was prudent to have an experienced player like Rahane as a backup in case the regular captain is unfit on the morning of the match. In the World Test Championship final at The Oval, the selectors did not name a vice-captain.
Sourav Ganguly expressed his confusion regarding the logic behind the decision, questioning the thought process. He mentioned that it seemed puzzling to make someone the vice-captain after being out of the team for 18 months and playing just one Test match. Sourav suggested that there were other potential candidates for the role, such as Ravindra Jadeja, who has been a consistent presence in Test matches.
