Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his insights on Ishan Kishan’s inclusion in the team for the ICC World Cup 2023. According to Chopra, Kishan’s selection will be influenced more by the team’s overall balance rather than solely on his individual performances.
The Indian selection committee faces a significant challenge in choosing the wicketkeepers for the World Cup squad. Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant are all contenders, but only two of them will make it to the final roster.
While Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have faced injuries, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have been provided opportunities and have shown promising performances. However, the ultimate decision might hinge on their batting positions, which could play a vital role in the selection process.

Ishan Kishan has been batting as an opener, but with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill already in the team, it is less likely that he will be given that role. Nevertheless, Kishan has exhibited strong batting form in ODIs, accumulating 510 runs in 13 innings, including a remarkable double century.
On the other hand, Sanju Samson has been performing well in the middle order. While Ishan Kishan’s primary position is as an opener, he has struggled to find similar success in other roles. Both players are part of the ongoing ODI series against West Indies, and this series could be decisive for either of them, especially with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant eyeing a comeback.
Aakash Chopra emphasizes that Ishan Kishan’s place in the World Cup squad will be determined by the team’s balance. If he is selected as the second wicketkeeper, he should ideally bat in the same position as the first-choice keeper. If he bats in a different position, it could significantly impact his chances of securing a spot in the final squad.
