Harmanpreet Kaur Suspended for Two Matches; Eligible to Play Eligible for Asian Games Final Only

Indian Women's Cricket Team Captain Faces Consequences for On-field Misconduct during Bangladesh ODI Series

Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, has been handed a two-match ban by the ICC following her misconduct during the third ODI against Bangladesh, where she expressed her displeasure by breaking the stumps due to what she believed was unfair umpiring. She also made contentious remarks, implying the umpires favored the Bangladesh team in the series.

Harmanpreet Kaur Suspended for Two Matches; Eligible to Play Eligible for Asian Games Final Only

As a consequence of her ban, Harmanpreet Kaur will only be allowed to play in the Asian Games 2023 if her team manages to reach the final of the prestigious event, commencing on September 23 in Hangzhou, China. However, she will be ineligible to participate in the quarter-final and semi-final matches due to her two-match suspension. The captain can only take part in the final, provided India qualifies for it.

On the other hand, the Indian men’s team has received a direct entry into the quarter-finals based on their ICC T20 ranking on June 1. The men’s event will feature 18 teams, while the women’s event will include 14 teams.

The women’s competition will kick off on September 19 and culminate with the gold and bronze medal matches on September 26.

In the wake of her actions during the final ODI against Bangladesh, BCCI President Roger Binny and head of cricket VVS Laxman are scheduled to question Harmanpreet. The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, confirmed the impending inquiry.

“Roger Binny and Laxman will question Harmanpreet on her outbursts during the third ODI against Bangladesh,” Shah stated in New Delhi.

The T20I series between India and Bangladesh concluded with India winning 2-1. However, Bangladesh bounced back to level the ODI series at 1-1. Harmanpreet Kaur is set to face a fine amounting to 75% of her match fees and will accrue four demerit points as well.
