World Cup 2023 Squad of Team India: IF Rahul and Iyer Fit

Though Axar and Jadeja are similar bowlers and turn the ball into the batter, the former has played more recently and could be given the edge over R Ashwin.

Some players are automatic choices, but uncertainties remain about the fitness and availability of others. We are assuming that India will have a complete and fit group of cricketers to select from, and our predicted squad reflects that assumption.

Openers

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan (wk)

Captain Rohit is guaranteed to be in the starting lineup, despite his recent remarks about nobody’s position being secure. His opening partner is also certain, as the Indian team showed their preference by choosing Gill in ODIs this year over the experienced Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan, known for his performance in ICC events, has faced difficulties with timing and strike rate, batting at 74.21 in 2022. In contrast, Gill has emerged successfully from the background with a strong start to 2023. Gill’s impressive performance almost confirms Dhawan’s exclusion. Despite Gill’s recent period of poor form, he should be the second opener in the initial match.

Kishan has advanced in the selection hierarchy following his consecutive half-centuries in the West Indies, where the pitches were slower. He managed his innings impeccably and showed maturity in adapting to the conditions. He will serve as both the alternative opening batsman and a substitute wicketkeeper in the squad.

Middle-order

Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk)

Even suggesting the omission of Kohli would be considered sacrilegious, so let’s not even entertain that idea. While Kohli is making a comeback to form, Indian supporters will fervently hope and pray that both Iyer and Rahul can recover completely and make remarkable returns. Both Iyer and Rahul, currently dealing with injuries, are crucial members of the middle order. Their absence could lead to batting difficulties, especially since their replacements lack proven track records.

Iyer possesses the ability to challenge spin bowlers during the middle overs and can also be relied upon to stabilize the top-order collapse, a scenario familiar to Indian fans during critical situations. Rahul’s performance at the No.5 spot has been astonishing, with an average of 53 in 18 matches at that position, including one century and seven fifties.

Should Iyer and Rahul remain unavailable due to their fitness issues, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav are likely to step in as replacements. However, these choices do not inspire confidence among the fans. Samson, despite his considerable talent, often faces challenges with shot selection and temperament. Yadav himself acknowledged that his ODI statistics have been quite poor recently.

All-rounders

Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel

Though Axar and Jadeja are similar bowlers and turn the ball into the batter, the former has played more recently and could be given the edge over R Ashwin. Ashwin last played an ODI in January 2022, and unless there is a repeat of the 2021 T20 World Cup when the off-spinner made a return after four years for the event, Axar will be picked as a backup to Jadeja. He has also improved his batting in recent years, even playing as a specialist No.7 in the second T20I against West Indies recently.

Hardik answers a number of issues for India with regard to the team balance. He is likely to be joined by Thakur as the second seam all-rounder, after developing a habit of grabbing wickets in the middle overs, breaking important partnerships when least expected. His batting is a bonus as well.

Spinners

Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal

The selection of these two players is obvious, as there are no other prominent spinners in contention. Kuldeep has been performing exceptionally well since his return, making some adjustments to his bowling. He maintains an average of 20.91 in the format since the beginning of 2022, making him a preferable choice over Chahal in the starting eleven.

Fast bowlers

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami

Once again, there are no unexpected choices in this scenario. Ideally, India would prefer to include all three fast bowlers in the team. However, doing so would significantly diminish the batting strength, leaving it only until the seventh position. Considering that Hardik is also contributing with his bowling, the likelihood of all three fast bowlers being in the playing XI is low, except for matches on tracks with substantial bounce, such as in Kolkata or Dharamsala.
