The long-awaited India-Pakistan clash at the Asia Cup came to a premature end as persistent drizzle prevented any play following the innings break on Saturday.

India, choosing to bat first, was bowled out for 266 within their allotted 50 overs. Unfortunately, Pakistan never got a chance to begin their reply, resulting in a disappointing conclusion to their first One Day International (ODI) encounter since the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England.

With points shared between the teams, Pakistan secured advancement to the Super 4 stage, having previously defeated Nepal. India, on the other hand, must secure a victory against Nepal in their final group match to progress.

India’s batters faced a formidable challenge from Pakistan’s trio of fast bowlers, all consistently clocking speeds above 140 kilometers per hour. Shaheen Afridi claimed four wickets, while Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf secured three wickets each.

Shaheen Afridi, opening the bowling for Pakistan, dismissed key figures Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (4), providing an early advantage to Pakistan. Haris Rauf later removed Shubman Gill (10) and Shreyas Iyer (14), further weakening India’s position at 66-4.

India’s recovery came courtesy of a remarkable fifth-wicket partnership between Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan, amassing 138 runs from 141 deliveries. Following the top-order collapse, Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, introduced spin into the attack, briefly shifting the game’s momentum in India’s favor.

The partnership finally ended when Haris Rauf returned to the attack and dismissed Kishan, who had contributed 82 runs from 81 balls, featuring nine fours and two sixes. Shaheen Afridi then struck twice in a single over, including the top-scorer, Hardik Pandya, who managed 87 runs off 90 deliveries, including seven fours and one six.

Subsequently, Naseem Shah swiftly dismantled India’s tail-end, securing their dismissal in 48.5 overs, capping an outstanding day in the field for Pakistan. Despite experiencing two rain interruptions during India’s innings, the game proceeded without any reduction in overs.
