IND vs PAK, Asia Cup 2023: Here’s What Will Happen Next if Rain Washes Out the Match Today

As widely predicted, rain has disrupted yet another India-Pakistan clash at the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo. It started as a drizzle but quickly escalated into a heavy downpour, forcing the groundstaff to hurriedly cover the field.

India, batting first after Pakistan’s decision, made an excellent start in their first match of the Super 4 stage. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma formed a century stand with both scoring half-centuries. However, Pakistan struck back with a couple of crucial wickets, setting the stage for an intriguing phase of play.

KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were at the crease, attempting to navigate a nervy period as dot balls accumulated. Unfortunately, with India at 147/2 in 24.1 overs, rain intervened, compelling the players to retreat to the dressing room.

While there’s hope for the rain to relent and the game to resume, the tournament organizers have recently added a reserve day for this particular match, a decision made just a couple of days ago. Here’s the scenario:

  1. If rain washes out the play on Sunday, the contest will resume on Monday from where it left off today.
  2. If rain stops today and allows for the game to resume before the cut-off time, overs lost due to major delays will invoke the DLS method.
  3. If rain relents after the cut-off for India’s innings, and they have played over 20 overs, Pakistan will be given a revised target based on DLS calculations. The organizers are committed to deciding the contest tonight before considering the reserve day.
  4. In the unfortunate event of both days being washed out, the teams will share a point each. However, this could make India’s path to the final more challenging, as Pakistan and Sri Lanka have each won their opening matches in this round, earning two points, while Bangladesh has suffered two losses.
