IND vs PAK, Asia Cup 2023: Can India Reach Final If Rain Washes Out the Reserve Day?

With a reserve day available, there's still hope for a result, but the weather forecast for the reserve day is not promising.

The India-Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup Super Four had to be rescheduled due to rain on its originally planned match-day in Colombo. While India was batting at 147/2 after 24.1 overs, rain halted the game.

With a reserve day available, there’s still hope for a result, but the weather forecast for the reserve day is not promising. If rain washes out the reserve day too, both teams will share a point, and India will finally get on the Super Four points table. However, this scenario could significantly impact India’s chances of reaching the Asia Cup finals.

Currently third in the standings, India has two more games left. In the event of a washout with Pakistan, Pakistan would lead with three points, and Sri Lanka would have two points. To secure a spot in the final, India would then need to win both remaining games against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Alternatively, if India wins only one of those two games, they would depend on other results. For instance, if they beat Sri Lanka, they’d hope Pakistan defeats Sri Lanka too, leaving India with three points and Sri Lanka with two. If Pakistan doesn’t beat Sri Lanka, it would come down to net run rate, as both India and Pakistan would have three points.

If India beats only Bangladesh, they would need to rely solely on net run rate, as a loss to Sri Lanka would put Sri Lanka at four points and Pakistan at three. In this case, the outcome of the Sri Lanka-Pakistan match becomes crucial, and India could qualify if their net run rate is superior to Pakistan’s.

In summary, India’s path to the Asia Cup finals hinges on results and net run rate, making the outcomes of other matches crucial to their qualification prospects.
