Gautam Gambhir has once again sparked debate among cricket enthusiasts by crediting MS Dhoni for Rohit Sharma’s meteoric rise in cricket. Rohit recently achieved the milestone of 10,000 runs in One Day Internationals during an Asia Cup Super 4 match against Sri Lanka, solidifying his status as one of the game’s premier openers.

Gambhir highlighted Rohit’s journey from a middle-order batsman to a prolific opener and noted that it was MS Dhoni’s wise leadership that transformed his career. He emphasized the crucial role Dhoni played in nurturing Rohit’s potential and shaping him into the formidable opener he is today.

“Scoring 10,000 runs was not easy for him. Saw many ups and downs. Having seen that phase, Rohit, as a captain, will back youngsters who go through a difficult period. Rohit Sharma is Rohit Sharma today because of MS Dhoni,” Gambhir stated on Star Sports.

Gambhir also shared a memorable encounter with Rohit during a domestic match when Rohit scored a remarkable 130 runs to secure victory for his team. This encounter left Gambhir with the impression that Rohit Sharma was a special talent.

Reflecting on Rohit’s new role as captain, Gambhir emphasized the importance of mentoring and nurturing young talents, drawing a parallel between Rohit and Dhoni. He highlighted the significance of backing emerging players to leave a lasting legacy as a captain.

“MS backed him continuously in his initial struggling phase. If he wants to leave a legacy behind, not in terms of runs but as a captain, a lot will depend on how he backs the young players. It will be interesting to see how he grooms the upcoming players,” Gambhir added.
