In a decision aimed at carefully managing his workload and ensuring his fitness ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is set to be rested for the next Asia Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh. Mohammed Shami is expected to step into the lineup to fill the void left by Bumrah’s absence.

Jasprit Bumrah’s return to international cricket last month marked a significant moment for the Indian cricket team. The 29-year-old seamer made a triumphant comeback, making an immediate impact with his trademark precision and pace. In the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, Bumrah has been instrumental in India’s success, playing a pivotal role in dismantling Pakistan’s top order and contributing to two crucial wickets against Sri Lanka.

However, the workload on Bumrah, who has been recovering from a back injury sustained in September 2022, remains a significant concern. Head coach Rahul Dravid had previously hinted at the need to carefully manage Bumrah’s return to international cricket, given the bowler’s history of injuries. Back-to-back appearances in the high-intensity format of One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the Asia Cup are seen as a potential risk to his long-term fitness.

In the Super 4 clash between India and Sri Lanka during the Asia Cup 2023, Bumrah experienced a scare when he seemingly twisted his ankle while bowling. The incident raised concerns among Indian cricket fans, given his recent injury history. Bumrah had previously missed the T20 World Cup and the Indian Premier League as part of his rehabilitation process.

Fortunately, the injury scare turned out to be less severe than feared. Bumrah, despite an awkward landing and a twisted ankle during the follow-through, displayed his resilience by continuing his bowling spell. He even managed to dismiss Pathum Nissanka in his very next over.

In the meantime, Jasprit Bumrah is set to return home briefly to be with his wife and son, ensuring a well-deserved break before India’s next encounter. This decision not only emphasizes the Indian team’s commitment to managing Bumrah’s fitness but also underscores the importance of balancing international cricket commitments with personal life.

With Mohammed Shami waiting in the wings, India remains well-equipped to handle Bumrah’s absence for the upcoming match against Bangladesh. Shami, who had been India’s go-to seamer in Bumrah’s absence, is expected to play a vital role in the team’s World Cup campaign and will have the opportunity to showcase his skills once again in the Asia Cup.
