3 Major Injuries for New Zealand before ODI World Cup 2023

The New Zealand cricket team faced a double setback at the Lord’s Cricket Ground during the four-match ODI series against England, raising concerns just before the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, set to commence on October 5.

The most significant blow was to star pace bowler Tim Southee, who suffered a right thumb injury. Southee dislocated and fractured his right thumb while attempting a catch during the match. His availability for the ODI World Cup now hangs in the balance, pending further assessment.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed Southee’s injury on their official account, stating that an x-ray confirmed the dislocation and fracture. The timeline for his recovery will be determined after further assessment. Southee’s potential absence is a major concern, given his experience and skill with the ball, which are crucial for the team’s success.

Unfortunately, Southee wasn’t the sole casualty in that match at Lord’s. Daryl Mitchell, another key player in the New Zealand squad, had to leave the field after a blow to his ring finger. The extent of Mitchell’s injury remains undisclosed, adding to the team’s growing injury worries.

In addition to Southee and Mitchell, Ben Lister suffered a hamstring injury, while Finn Allen faced a finger injury scare. Fortunately, subsequent tests revealed no major issues for Allen, providing some relief to the New Zealand camp.

These injuries are especially concerning as two of the three injured players are part of the World Cup squad. With doubts surrounding their regular skipper Kane Williamson’s availability in the starting eleven for the tournament, these injuries have disrupted New Zealand’s preparations and team morale.
