‘Injuries could cost us the World Cup’- Rahul Dravid

India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, has voiced his concerns about the impact of injuries on the team’s preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup. Notably, players like Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel have faced setbacks due to injuries, adding complexity to squad management.

Shreyas Iyer, recovering from a previous injury, could only participate in the first two games of the Asia Cup due to a back spasm. Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Axar Patel missed the Asia Cup final due to a left quadriceps strain, and both players are integral to India’s World Cup plans.

These injuries not only affect the individual players but also disrupt the team’s overall preparation and strategy for the ODI World Cup. The team management, including Dravid, faces the challenge of carefully managing player fitness and rehabilitation to ensure their readiness for the tournament.

Dravid acknowledged the tricky situation, stating, “We are in a tricky situation where some guys need to be rested, while some guys need some cricket. It is a tricky balance to achieve.” Injuries so close to the World Cup can be costly, and uncertainties surround the fitness of players.

KL Rahul’s successful comeback from injury during the Asia Cup was a positive development for India. However, India’s opponent in the final, Sri Lanka, also grappled with injuries to key players, including Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dilshan Madushanka, and Dushmantha Chameera, affecting their campaign.

These instances underline how injuries can significantly impact a team’s performance, highlighting the importance of managing player fitness and rehabilitation. Pakistan, another participating team in the World Cup, is also dealing with fitness concerns for their pacers, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf.

In the lead-up to the World Cup, teams face the challenge of monitoring and managing player injuries to ensure they are match-ready for the tournament. These efforts are crucial as the ODI World Cup, scheduled to begin in India on October 5, draws nearer.
