As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, discussions and debates about team compositions and player selections are heating up. In a recent conversation with ESPNCricinfo, former Indian captain Piyush Chawla shared his thoughts on the ideal composition of India’s playing XI, particularly regarding the choice between Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami.

In the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were the first-choice pacers for the Indian team. Shardul Thakur occupied the third pacer’s slot, primarily due to his ability to contribute with the bat in the lower order. However, Chawla has raised questions about Thakur’s place in the playing XI, highlighting concerns about his economy rate as a bowler.

Chawla emphasized the importance of a bowler who can maintain consistency in pace on flat pitches, which are commonly encountered in ODI cricket. He pointed out that while Shardul Thakur is known for his aggressive batting style, he might not provide the quick runs needed in the latter stages of an ODI inning.

“If we talk about Shardul’s batting, it’s not that he is somebody who will come and give you those quick fire 30, 40 runs off 20 balls. He’s a good player for a run-a-ball or sometimes maybe like 20-ball 25 runs,” Chawla stated.

Regarding Thakur’s bowling, Chawla acknowledged that he has taken wickets but expressed concerns about his economy rate, which tends to be on the higher side. Given the flat wickets expected during the World Cup, Chawla stressed the need for a genuine bowler who can consistently deliver at speeds between 135-140 km/h.

“Also, if you talk about the conditions where India is going to play, most of the wicket is going to be a bit flat. So you need somebody who’s like a proper bowler, who can come in one change and still bowl at the 135-140 mark,” Chawla added.

Chawla’s preference for Mohammed Shami is grounded in Shami’s recent performances. Shami showcased his bowling prowess during the first ODI of the series against Australia, registering career-best figures of 5/51. In contrast, Shardul Thakur went wicketless and conceded 78 runs in his 10-over spell.

Piyush Chawla also commended Mohammed Shami for his simplicity and effective use of the upright seam position, which works well on different types of pitches. Shami’s ability to keep things uncomplicated and his adaptability make him a valuable asset to the Indian bowling attack.

Shami’s standout performance earned him the Player of the Match award as India secured a five-wicket victory in the series opener. As cricket enthusiasts look forward to the upcoming matches, including the second ODI at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24, the debate surrounding the composition of India’s playing XI continues to gain traction.
