Tom Latham and Kane Williamson constructed an unbeaten partnership of 208 runs for the fourth wicket in the chase against India in the first ODI to take their team home. This partnership between Latham and Williamson is the highest stand by a Kiwi pair against India in ODIs. The records kept tumbling in this match which saw the genius of Tom Latham and Kane Williamson.

Earlier before the action commenced New Zealand won the toss and invited India to bat first. The Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill came out with positive intent and constructed a very good partnership of 124 runs before the latter was caught out. Soon Dhawan was also sent back and India looked into all sorts of troubles with Pant and SKY also failing in the middle order.

Shreyas Iyer played a crucial knock of 80 off 76 to help India reach a fighting total. Iyer got good help from Samson but the real impetus in the inning was provided by Washington Sundar’s fiery knock. Sundar blasted 37* off 16 with 3 fours and 3 sixes to his name. India finished its inning with 306 runs on board. For New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee picked 3 wickets each.

Chasing 307 New Zealand looked in trouble early on as Finn Allen and Devon Conway could not provide a great start. Daryl Mitchell also failed to make an impact and the Kiwis were 88/3 in 20 overs. However, after this, the New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and Tom Latham made a mockery of the Indian bowling unit.

Latham went unbeaten on 140* off just 104 deliveries while Williamson remained unbeaten on 94* off 98. With this New Zealand has gone up in the series with a lead of 1-0.
