In a surprising twist, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the top eight teams at the end of the preliminary round of the 2023 World Cup would earn the coveted qualification for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2025. The decision added an extra layer of intensity to the league stage, with teams fighting not just for World Cup glory but also for a ticket to the prestigious Champions Trophy.

India, the powerhouse that emerged unbeaten and secured a spot in the semifinals, led the charge as one of the first teams to confirm their participation in the Champions Trophy. Joining them are second-placed South Africa, third-placed Australia, and New Zealand, who clinched the final semifinal berth in the World Cup 2023.

The Netherlands, who delivered shocking wins over South Africa and Bangladesh, couldn’t sustain the momentum and found themselves at the bottom of the table, missing out on the Champions Trophy qualification.

West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Ireland Miss Out

Adding to the drama, the ICC’s rule made it clear that Full-Member nations like West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Ireland would miss out on the Champions Trophy event. Failing to qualify for the World Cup in India, these cricketing nations will now have to regroup and refocus for future tournaments.
