India is gearing up for a challenging two-match Test series against South Africa, with the first Test scheduled at SuperSport Park in Centurion on December 26. The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, aims to create history by securing a Test series victory in South Africa and maintaining its top position in the World Test Championship 2023-25 Points table.
India’s Test squad boasts considerable firepower, but the absence of Mohammed Shami and Ishan Kishan is noteworthy. Shami’s injury-related withdrawal and Kishan’s personal reasons have opened opportunities for other players. KS Bharat has been added to the squad as the second wicketkeeper.
Captain Rohit Sharma will partner with the promising Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order. Jaiswal, who made a memorable Test debut against the West Indies, scoring 171 runs, aims to continue his impressive form. Shubman Gill, likely batting at No. 3, replaces Cheteshwar Pujara, providing stability to the top order. Virat Kohli, a mainstay at No. 4, and Shreyas Iyer, expected to bat at No. 5, form the core of the middle order.

With Ishan Kishan’s withdrawal, KL Rahul is set to take on the dual responsibility of a wicketkeeper-batter. Having showcased his leadership skills by winning an ODI series in South Africa, Rahul is poised to be a key figure in the Test lineup. Despite KS Bharat’s inclusion, Rahul’s superior batting performance likely secures his place.
The Centurion pitch, known for favoring pacers, presents a dilemma regarding the inclusion of spinners. While world No. 1 Test all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is expected to feature, the inclusion of world No. 1 Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin is uncertain. The conditions may lead to a preference for the pace of Shardul Thakur over Ashwin. Thakur’s recent batting prowess adds depth to the lower order.
Jasprit Bumrah, the leader of India’s pace attack, will spearhead the bowling department. Mohammed Siraj, known for his consistent performances, is likely to be the second new ball bowler. The absence of Shami opens up a slot, and the choice between Mukesh Kumar and Prasidh Krishna will be intriguing.
