Usman Khawaja Becomes ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2023

Australian opener Usman Khawaja has been crowned the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for his outstanding performances in the longest format of the game throughout 2023. The accolade recognizes Khawaja’s remarkable contributions with the bat, making him a standout player in the highly competitive world of Test cricket.

Not Ashwin, Head or Root, But This Australian Clinches ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2023

Usman Khawaja’s journey to the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year was not without its share of controversies. His publicized dispute with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding his desire to display human rights symbols on his bat and shoes created headlines. During Australia’s Test series against Pakistan, Khawaja sought permission from the ICC to incorporate symbols of human rights on his equipment. However, the ICC rejected his request, citing their policy against conveying personal, political, or religious messages through cricketing gear.

In response, Khawaja posted a video on Instagram, pointing out other players like Nicholas Pooran, Marnus Labuschagne, and Keshav Maharaj, who displayed personal or religious symbols on their bats. This move by Khawaja sparked confusion and raised questions about the consistency of the ICC’s decisions.

Despite the ICC’s ruling, Usman Khawaja received support from his captain, Pat Cummins, and other teammates, who defended his right to express personal beliefs. Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley also backed Khawaja, emphasizing the universal recognition of the dove symbol as a sign of peace. After the Test series against Pakistan, Khawaja was allowed to display the requested symbol on his shoes during the Big Bash League 2023/24, following approval from Cricket Australia for domestic matches.

Khawaja faced tough competition from notable players, including India’s all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, England’s top-order batter Joe Root, and his teammate Travis Head. The ICC’s judgment reflected that Khawaja’s overall performance in the 2023 season surpassed that of his counterparts.

Usman Khawaja’s statistics for the year speak volumes about his impact on the Test arena. He amassed 1210 runs in 13 Tests, boasting an exceptional average of 52.60. His highest score, an unbeaten 195 against South Africa, showcased his ability to anchor the innings and play long, impactful innings. Khawaja began the year with a stellar performance in the Border-Gavaskar trophy in India, amassing 333 runs across the four-match Test series, ending as the highest run-getter.

The Australian opener’s tally of three centuries and six half-centuries played a pivotal role in Australia’s success in the 2021-2023 World Test Championship cycle. Additionally, his contributions were crucial in Australia’s victory over India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval.
