India Slips to Fifth Position in WTC Points Table after Hyderabad Test Loss to England

The Indian cricket team's aspirations in the World Test Championship (WTC) faced a setback as they slid to the fifth position in the points table following their 28-run loss to England in the first Test match held in Hyderabad.

Despite showcasing dominance in significant phases of the match, India couldn’t secure a win against England. Ollie Pope’s impressive innings and Tom Hartley’s seven-wicket haul played pivotal roles in England’s victory. The defeat leaves India with just two wins from five matches in the WTC, translating to a Percentage of Total Points (PCT) of 43.33.

The debutant spinner, Tom Hartley, emerged as a game-changer, claiming seven wickets and contributing significantly to England’s unexpected triumph over India in the opening Test. Ollie Pope’s standout performance with a score of 196 played a crucial role in England’s comeback, turning the tide in their favor and securing a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England skipper Ben Stokes expressed the significance of the victory, stating, “Since I’ve taken the captaincy on… it’s 100 percent our greatest victory.” The match took a dramatic turn as India, chasing 231 for victory, succumbed to England’s bowling attack and were bowled out for 202 in the final over of an extended third session on the fourth day in Hyderabad.

Hartley’s impressive performance, including a crucial five-wicket haul and dismissing wicketkeeper-batsman K.S. Bharat, earned him figures of 7-62 and a match tally of nine wickets. The left-arm spinner’s exceptional contribution left an indelible mark on the match.

Reflecting on the victory, Hartley shared his disbelief, stating that the win was “not going to sink in” for some time. The unexpected outcome has added a new dimension to India’s Test series record on home soil, as they entered the high-profile encounter as favorites with an unbeaten streak since 2012.

Despite the setback, India will aim to regroup and bounce back in the remaining matches of the series, striving to improve their standing in the World Test Championship.
