T20 World Cup 2026 is going to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The format of the next T20 World Cup will also be similar to the World Cup played in 2024 with 20 teams playing in it.

T20 World Cup 2024 concluded with the India vs South Africa final match. The Indian team managed to win the title for the second time. Now bilateral series will start, but in the meantime the ICC has made a big announcement about the next T20 World Cup. It was already decided where the next season of the T20 World Cup will be played, but the International Cricket Council has also told many other things in its new story.

Actually, the ICC has blown the trumpet for the T20 World Cup 2026. Just as the T20 World Cup 2024 was successfully concluded with 20 teams, in the same way 20 teams will be seen playing in the next T20 World Cup. The 2024 T20 World Cup was jointly hosted by West Indies and USA, similarly India and Sri Lanka will be seen jointly hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup. This tournament can be played in February and March.

The format of T20 World Cup 2026 will be the same as 2024, where a total of 55 matches were played including the final. This time also 20 teams will participate in the tournament, which will be divided into four groups. After this, the top two teams in the points table of all four groups will get a place in the Super 8. Two groups will also be formed in the Super 8. The top 2 teams in the points table from both the groups of Super 8 will get entry in the semi-finals and then the final match will be played.

As hosts, India and Sri Lanka have automatically qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Apart from this, all the eight teams reaching the Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2024 have got automatic qualification. Of these, India has already qualified as the host, while Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, England, USA and West Indies teams have directly qualified for the next World Cup. The 9th team is Sri Lanka, which is the host along with India. Apart from this, the ICC had set a cut-off on June 30 that any team that remains in the top 10 in the ICC T20 rankings by this date will get a chance to play directly in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Since the top 10 also includes the teams of India and Sri Lanka and USA has automatically qualified for the tournament by reaching the Super 8, the top 11 teams have got a chance to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2026. For this reason, New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland have got direct entry, because 8 teams of Super 8 and 4 teams based on ranking were going to qualify from T20 World Cup 2024. On 30 June 2024, New Zealand’s ranking in T20 International Cricket was 6, Pakistan’s ranking is 7 and Ireland’s ranking is 11.

In this way, 12 teams have got direct tickets for T20 World Cup 2026, while 8 teams will qualify for T20 World Cup 2026 through regional qualifiers. Two teams each from the regions of Africa, Asia and Europe will get a chance to qualify, while one team each will qualify from the American region and Asia Pacific region. In this way, a total of 20 teams will be seen playing the tournament. Teams like Nepal, Scotland, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, Oman, Canada, Uganda and Namibia played in the 2024 T20 World Cup. If these teams want to play in the 2026 tournament, then they will have to win the qualifiers again.
