Former India captain MS Dhoni turned 43 this month, raising questions about whether he will play in the next IPL season. While the previous season was considered his last, Dhoni made no official announcement, leading many to believe he might play in the next IPL season. A significant update has emerged regarding Dhoni’s participation in IPL 2025.

Big Update on Dhoni Playing in IPL 2025

Dhoni will play in the next IPL season only if a specific rule is implemented before the auction. According to a report by Cricbuzz, if the BCCI allows teams to retain five to six players before the next season, then Dhoni will play. Currently, teams can retain only four players before the mega auction. If the BCCI changes this rule, Dhoni could be seen playing in the IPL again.

Chennai Super Kings might retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube if the current rule of four retentions remains. If the rule changes to allow more retentions, Dhoni could be retained as the fifth or sixth player. The BCCI’s decision on this matter will be made soon, with a meeting scheduled for July 31 that will include BCCI officials and team owners. Several other teams, in addition to CSK, are also pushing for an increase in the number of retained players.

    Played IPL 2024 Despite Injury

There has been much speculation about Dhoni’s retirement over the past few seasons, with fans often believing each season to be his last. However, Dhoni has continued to play for his fans. In the last season, he played despite an injury and later underwent surgery. Dhoni has played 264 matches in the IPL, scoring 5,243 runs and leading Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles. He remains one of the most successful captains in IPL history.
