Jaydev Unadkat, one of the standout bowlers in India’s domestic red-ball cricket, has had a compelling yet challenging career. Despite consistently taking wickets domestically, he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the Indian Test team. Even when included in the squad, his opportunities in the playing XI have been limited. With the Indian team preparing for the upcoming Test season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors chose not to include him in the Duleep Trophy squads. Consequently, Unadkat decided to sign with English county side Sussex, aiming to catch the selectors’ attention through this alternative route.
“I’m really happy to be back here. Hove is my second home. The team’s been doing fantastic this season and, hopefully, in the second leg of the season, we’ll pull through and get back to Division One, where we belong! Cheers,” Unadkat said in a video posted by Sussex on social media.
In his debut season with Sussex, Unadkat made a strong impression, taking 11 wickets in four matches as the team finished third in Division Two.
“We are all delighted that Jaydev is returning to the 1st Central County Ground for the final five championship matches of the upcoming season. Jaydev met expectations not only by showcasing his class on the field but also by being a fantastic individual and contributing to our goals. He’s a great person who went above and beyond to support our players and share his valuable knowledge,” added a Sussex spokesperson.
Unadkat was part of the India squad that toured the West Indies last year, with his last appearance for the national team coming in the second Test between the sides in July 2023.
