Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly vying to purchase the Manchester Originals franchise in The Hundred. This interest from the IPL franchises aligns with a broader trend of seeking investment from India. Currently, the Originals are solely owned by Lancashire, making them unique among The Hundred franchises.
The speculation around KKR and CSK’s involvement follows remarks by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, who referred to the auction as a “big fat Ponzi scheme” and questioned the Indian interest given that the franchise was valued at only €8.5 million.
Both KKR and CSK, highly valued franchises in the IPL, are now looking to expand their presence in England, joining other leagues such as the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Major League Cricket (MLC), and SA20. Additionally, reports suggest that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have also expressed interest in acquiring a stake in the franchise.

Lancashire’s chief executive, Daniel Gidny, previously stated to ESPNCricinfo that they are open to collaboration with an IPL team to enhance the growth of both the game and the league. IPL franchises have long sought to enter the English cricket system, initially through County Cricket but now pivoting to The Hundred. At least four teams have already shown interest in acquiring a significant stake in one of the eight franchises, with bids for a 49% stake submitted since early September.
