Overweight and Indisciplined: Prithvi Shaw Dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy Squad

In another setback to Prithvi Shaw’s cricketing career, the opening batter has been dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad. Although the team management hasn’t provided a specific reason for his exclusion, reports suggest that his attitude towards fitness and discipline is a major concern. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) selection committee, comprising Sanjay Patil (chairman), Ravi Thaker, Jeetendra Thackeray, Kiran Powar, and Vikrant Yeligeti, has reportedly decided to leave Shaw out for at least one Ranji Trophy match.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Shaw’s indiscipline has become a significant issue for the MCA. The selectors and team management are aiming to send a message by dropping him from the squad. One of the main concerns has been Shaw’s habit of arriving late for net sessions. The report also mentions that he doesn’t take practice sessions seriously and is often irregular. Additionally, Shaw’s weight has been pointed out as a reflection of his lack of discipline, which is troubling for someone in his profession.

In contrast, senior players like Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and captain Ajinkya Rahane have remained consistent in their training routines. Shaw, however, has missed several practice sessions, even after underperforming in matches. It’s believed that the decision to drop him was supported not only by the management and selectors but also by the captain and coach.

Shaw, who made his Test debut for India in 2018 against the West Indies in Rajkot, has seen his career suffer due to off-field issues. In the two Ranji matches he has played this season, Shaw has scored 7 and 12 (against Baroda), and 1 and 39 not out (against Maharashtra).

Despite his potential and aspirations to return to the Indian national team, Shaw’s inconsistent performances and lack of discipline are hampering his progress.
