Pat Cummins Issues ‘Bushy Pitches’ Alert to India Before Border-Gavaskar Trophy: “If It Were Up to Me…”

Team India is set to begin a five-Test tour of Australia next month, with the series potentially impacting their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s next year. India has emerged victorious in their last two Test tours of Australia, and the Rohit Sharma-led squad aims to secure a third consecutive win against Pat Cummins and his team. Cummins has seen significant success as captain of the Australian Test side, but his team lost the series during their recent visit to India last year. It has been nearly a decade since Australia last defeated India in a Test series, either at home or away.

In a recent conversation, Cummins shared that he wouldn’t have any influence over the pitch conditions. While pointing to the bushy plants behind the interviewer, he humorously remarked that he would prefer the pitches to resemble those bushes. “I wish, if I had my way, the pitches would look like those bushes behind you (laughs). Unfortunately, I don’t have any say, so we will wait and see. The wickets have been fantastic in the last couple of seasons. It feels like if someone scores a hundred, they’ve really earned it. It took them a few sessions, whereas in my first couple of years, some of the wickets were quite flat,” Cummins said on the Grade Cricketer’s Podcast.

Nonetheless, Cummins emphasized his desire for a balanced contest between bat and ball. “I just hope there’s a bit of balance between bat and ball. I think some of those Indian spinning wickets, like the one in Delhi on our last tour, we should have won. Having wickets like that keeps the teams closely matched. But you won’t hear our players complaining about those types of pitches,” he added.

Currently, India and Australia occupy the first and second spots in the WTC points table. Australia is scheduled to play two additional Tests against Sri Lanka away next year after India’s visit.
