Rohit Sharma to Retire from Test Cricket After BGT 2024, Says India’s World Cup Winner

Indian captain Rohit Sharma is facing heavy criticism after India was whitewashed by New Zealand in a recent three-match Test series at home. The defeat has sparked discussions about Rohit’s form in Test cricket, with questions raised over his place in the Indian Test squad.

Former Indian cricketer and selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth recently weighed in on the issue on his YouTube channel. Srikkanth suggested that if Rohit struggles in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia, he may choose to retire from Test cricket even before the selectors make a decision. Srikkanth commented, “If India doesn’t do well in Australia, it’s 100 per cent time to think ahead. If Rohit doesn’t perform, he might retire from Test cricket himself and stick to ODIs. He’s already left T20Is, and we have to remember he’s ageing; he’s not getting any younger.”

Following the New Zealand series loss, Rohit Sharma is set to meet with BCCI officials to discuss the future of Indian cricket. According to a PTI report, an informal meeting is scheduled between BCCI officials, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, coach Gautam Gambhir, and Rohit Sharma. The meeting will reportedly take place before India’s departure for Australia on November 10. Although the BCCI intends to review the current situation, there are no immediate plans to alter the announced squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

A BCCI source mentioned that if India fails to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final in England, it could affect the future of senior players like Kohli, Rohit, Ashwin, and Jadeja. In such a scenario, all four veterans might be left out of the squad for the upcoming five-Test series in England.
