“I Am Deeply Sorry”: Isa Guha Apologises for Referring to Jasprit Bumrah as a “Primate”

Isa Guha has issued a public apology after using the term “primate” to describe Jasprit Bumrah during her commentary on Day 2 of the third Test at the Gabba.

“Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah,” Guha remarked on Fox Cricket after Bumrah’s impressive five-wicket haul.

She continued by praising Bumrah’s impact: “He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the buildup to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”

The use of the word “primate” drew attention due to its sensitivity, especially in light of historical tensions between the two teams dating back to the 2008 Monkeygate scandal.

Responding to the criticism, Guha issued a heartfelt apology:
“Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. Firstly, I’d like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect for others. If you listen to the full transcript, my intention was only to offer the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players, whom I admire greatly.”

She added: “I am an advocate for equality and someone who has spent their career promoting inclusion and understanding in the game. I was trying to highlight the enormity of his achievements and chose the wrong word. For that, I am deeply sorry.”

“As someone of South Asian heritage, I hope people recognise that there was no malice or other intention behind my words. I hope this doesn’t overshadow what has been a great Test match so far. Once again, I am truly sorry.”
