Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has hailed Ravichandran Ashwin as the best spinner in the world at present after the veteran off-spinner emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.
Aakash Chopra applauded Ashwin’s remarkable six-wicket haul in the first innings of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, where he picked up a total of 25 wickets, including some crucial dismissals on pitches that did not offer much assistance to spinners.
Chopra further added that Ashwin has silenced all his critics who used to think that he could only pick wickets on pitches that helped the spinners. The former cricketer also hailed the all-round abilities of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, who both played crucial roles in India’s triumph in the series.
Chopra was particularly impressed with Axar Patel’s batting abilities, as the all-rounder scored a whopping 264 runs in four Tests. The former cricketer highlighted Patel’s sensational knock in Delhi that helped India avoid a massive first-innings deficit against Australia. Patel’s impressive performances with the bat have given the Indian team management the option of playing him as a specialist batter who can bowl if needed away from home.
Overall, Chopra’s analysis of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has provided a comprehensive view of India’s triumph over Australia, and his praise for Ashwin, Jadeja, and Patel has highlighted the tremendous depth of talent that Indian cricket currently possesses.
