In the thrilling series opener between India and West Indies on August 3, India fell just short of the target set by the Windies, suffering a narrow four-run defeat. During the run chase, Shubman Gill faced struggles against spin and scored only three runs off nine deliveries.
Speaking in a recent discussion on JioCinema, former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar shed light on Gill’s performance and expressed his belief that the young batsman would return better prepared to handle the spin threat in the remaining four matches of the T20I series.
“He will come prepared. Akeal Hosein is going to bowl to him in the next four matches with the new ball, and he is a bowler who will not give you room. Shubman’s strength is using his feet and employing the sweep shot,” Nayar asserted.

Nayar emphasized the need for Gill to find a way to score runs against spin in the powerplay overs when the ball starts to turn. He mentioned that in Guyana, where the next matches will be played, there will also be help for the spinners.
To counter the spin challenge, Nayar suggested that Gill might have to employ the reverse sweep, although acknowledging that it’s not a shot he plays often. He expressed confidence that the young talent would seek guidance from his father and go back to the drawing board to score runs in the next match.
