Angelo Mathews is a distinguished Sri Lankan cricketer, having served as the captain in all cricket formats during his career. While he initially represented Sri Lanka in all three formats, Mathews now focuses on playing Test and ODI cricket for the national team. He boasts a remarkable cricketing journey, including being a pivotal member of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20-winning team and reaching the finals of prestigious tournaments like the 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2009 ICC World Twenty20, and 2012 ICC World Twenty20.

Known for his occasional bowling prowess, capable of delivering crucial and swinging match-winning spells, Angelo Mathews, along with Lasith Malinga, holds the record for the highest ninth-wicket partnership in ODI cricket.

In July 2022, Angelo Mathews achieved a significant milestone by participating in his 100th Test match for Sri Lanka. During his tenure as captain, Mathews led the national team to victory in the 2014 Asia Cup, marking a memorable achievement in his cricketing career.

Angelo Mathews embarked on his List A cricket journey when he made his debut for Sri Lanka Under-23 against New Zealand A at the Police Park Ground in Colombo in September 2005. His leadership skills came to the fore when he captained the Sri Lankan cricket team in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup held in Sri Lanka. Subsequently, he made his debut in first-class cricket, representing the Colombo Cricket Club in November 2006.

Angelo Mathews was born in Colombo to a Tamil father, Tyronne Mathews, and a Burgher mother, Monica Mathews. He follows the Roman Catholic faith and received his education at St. Joseph’s College in Colombo.

In his personal life, Angelo Mathews is married to his long-time partner, Heshanie Silva. Their wedding reception took place on July 18, 2013, at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, and it was graced by the presence of former President Mahinda Rajapakse. The couple has been blessed with one son and one daughter.
