Ashwin’s Team Accused of Ball Tampering, Towel Sparks Controversy in TNPL

In the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), a ball tampering controversy erupted involving R Ashwin-led Dindigul Dragons. Siechem Madurai Panthers accused the Dragons of tampering with the ball using a “chemical-laced towel” during their match on June 14 in Salem. However, both Dindigul Dragons and their captain R Ashwin were later cleared of all ball-tampering allegations by the TNPL authorities.

According to a report by Cricinfo, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) stated that a review found no evidence of any tampering during the match. It is understood that the towels in question were provided by the state cricket body to dry the ball in case it got wet. The drying process was carried out in the presence of on-field umpires. TNPL has now asked the Panthers to submit proof supporting their allegations.

TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan wrote in an email to the Panthers that the accusations were made after the match and seemed speculative, lacking any solid evidence. He noted that the complaint appeared to be based on internal communication within the team.

Kannan further mentioned that neither the on-field umpires nor the match referee filed any complaints during or after the match. He clarified that the towels under suspicion were issued by the TNCA and were equally available to both teams. The match officials closely monitored the ball throughout the game.

It is also learned that TNPL is planning to form an internal committee to further discuss the matter. Kannan added that if the franchise has credible and verifiable evidence, they must formally request an independent inquiry by 3 PM on June 17, along with any supporting materials such as video footage, photographs, or other proof.

Earlier, Panthers CEO Mahesh S had written to TNPL, claiming that the defending champions, Dindigul Dragons, had clearly tampered with the ball. In his letter, he also urged TNPL officials to investigate the source of the towel used. In that match, held at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground, the Dragons had defeated the Panthers convincingly by nine wickets.

Batting first, the Panthers posted 150 for 8 in 20 overs. R Ashwin did not take any wickets and gave away 27 runs in his four overs. However, he opened the innings and scored a brisk 49 off 29 balls, helping the Dragons chase down the target in just 12.3 overs.
