Bangladesh’s seasoned batsman, Tamim Iqbal, has suddenly decided to step down as the ODI team’s captain immediately. This decision comes shortly after he initially announced his retirement from the 50-over format, which he later reversed due to unforeseen circumstances. With the upcoming World Cup in consideration, Tamim has chosen to reduce his responsibilities by giving up the captaincy.

Tamim Iqbal, in a press conference alongside the BCB president, explained that after an important meeting with Jalal Yunus and Nazmul Hassan, he has decided to step down as the ODI captain of the Bangladesh cricket team. He mentioned that despite taking injections, his health issues have become unpredictable, and he prioritizes the team’s welfare over his captaincy.

Tamim also mentioned discussing his problems with the Prime Minister, who advised him to step down for the team’s betterment. While he won’t participate in the upcoming Asia Cup to avoid pushing himself, he remains optimistic about being available for the subsequent New Zealand series.

After assuming the role of Bangladesh’s ODI captain in March 2020, Tamim successfully guided the team to 21 wins in 37 matches, resulting in an impressive win percentage of 56.75. This achievement places him closely behind Mashrafe Mortaza, who holds the highest win percentage (56.81) among all Bangladesh captains.

Tamim expressed satisfaction with his captaincy journey, stating that he believes he has performed well in the role. He also emphasized his commitment to supporting the team’s captain, regardless of whether he holds the captaincy title himself, as he will always act as a leader on the field.
