  • Bangladesh threatened but India’s fielding the gamechanger on a slippery day

India vs Bangladesh in world cups have produced some heart-stopping matches over the years with a mixture of heartbreaks and ecstasy. The 2007 debacle, the 2015 no ball controversy and the nail-biting last over of 2016 have all been games that are etched in memories of millions.

India entered today’s game the more nervous of the two sides with questions being thrown at their opening batters and Shakib playing some wonderful mind games in the pre match press conference. There were calls to drop KL Rahul and bring the left-handed genius of Pant in but the team management backed the class of Rahul to come through and how he repaid that faith. After a watchful first over, KL Rahul showed the world his elegance, playing shots all over the ground, leaving everyone watching in awe. His cut shot for a six over point was a shot of a batter of immense class. Virat Kohli continued his rich vein of form, giving India the much needed impetus in the death overs despite only facing 8 balls in the last 3 overs. Suryakumar Yadav stepped onto the field and continued batting like a dream as Ashwin arrived on the crease and played some eye pleasing strokes, guiding India to a competitive total of 184.

Bangladesh certainly looked pumped from the start of the game and did seem well in control before the Rahul burst and would have certainly walked back at the halfway stage thinking they were 15-20 runs above par. India would’ve believed that they had a decent score on board and rightly so, as this is only the third time a team has posted a total above 180. Liton Das was promoted to the opening slot and it proved to be a masterstroke as the batter played some audacious strokes and raced his way to half century that will be remembered for a very long time. The score after the powerplay read 60/0 and Liton Das was batting at 56 at that moment, with the Indian camp looking shellshocked with the onslaught.

While there was rain predicted during the day, the ground staff was certainly caught by surprise as it showered down at the Adelaide Oval. Players were taken off the field and Bangladesh were ahead of the DLS par score by 17 runs, a figure that brought back dreadful memories of 2007. The rain persisted for a while but eventually made way for play resume with Bangladesh needing 151 in 16 overs. Shakib and his men did not seem to happy about the rush to resume play and raised safety concerned but umpires had made a decision.

Bangladesh walked back onto the field more confident of the two sides but a brilliant throw from KL Rahul in the deep saw Liton Das walking back to the pavilion and the Bangladesh chase really hit a block. The Indian bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals but it all boiled down to the last ball, where 7 runs were needed but India’s new death bowler arsenal; Arshdeep Singh, closed out a well deserved and achieved victory for team India.

With a win today, India have all but assured themselves of a spot in the top 2 unless the cricketing gods decide to be unkind.

  • Clueless and concerned, Indian players react after selectors press conference

Clueless and concerned, Indian players react after selectors press conference

The BCCI selection committee held a press conference yesterday, announcing the squads for the upcoming tours of New Zealand and Bangladesh, which includes a 2 T20Is series, a Test and ODI series as well.

Selection announcements have always proven to be a topic of hot debate, especially during the Chetan Sharma tenure where press conferences and questions related to the squads are not usually conducted. In what could be the present committee’s last press conference, Chetan Sharma certainly gave the pundits and certain players a shock with regards to their selection calls.

The squads announced for the T20Is signal the beginning of a transition phase for the Indian Cricket Team, that has excluded the likes of R Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik and in what could be a sign of things to come, handed over the captaincy mantle to Hardik Pandya. In a promise to reinvent and rejuvenate their T20I cricket, the selectors have certainly made some calls in the opposite direction with the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the squad and an ageing Bhuvneshwar Kumar still being in the mix, despite the next high-profile tournament being 2 years away.

Another notable point was the sudden exclusion of budding leg spinner: Ravi Bishnoi. Leading up to the World Cup, Rahul-Rohit duo displayed immense faith in Bishnoi and provided him with proper gametime to make a claim for the spot but banked on the experience spin wizard Chahal to come good. Kuldeep Yadav getting the nod ahead of Bishnoi after being snubbed for a while, is certainly something that the latter didn’t take well and making his feelings and emotions about the matter quite clear.

Nitish Rana, the left-handed middle order batter has also expressed his disappointed after being snubbed despite a good season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but shouldn’t be too disheartened, going by the fact that his competition in the race is Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant and the ever-promising Washington Sundar. Umesh Yadav was included in the squad versus Australia at home after ace pacer Mohammad Shami tested covid positive but was duly dropped after the former proved his fitness. His situation is a clear case of lack of communication from the selectors with regards to his T20I future, as it is evidently clear that India will be heavily investing in the young-pace battery and aim to groom them.

But perhaps the most perplexing exclusion was that of the gifted prodigal talent, Prithvi Shaw. After a dream start to his international career, Shaw has faltered and faced numerous hardships on and off the field but come back roaring with stellar performances in the domestic season across formats. He again joined the bandwagon of players posting cryptic messages or stories in reply to the calls made by the selection committee.

In a world run by social media, it has certainly become easier for players to show dissent, disappointment or react to certain decisions and it also shows how disconnected the selectors are with the players involved in the fray of things. To have players post cryptic messages denoting unhappiness and confusion, paints a bad picture on the BCCI that seems to have no degree of communication with the players with regards to their non-selection and leaves the players fighting for a spot in an insecure position.

With Rahul Dravid being at the helm and always preaching open communication, it is to be seen how the management reacts to the reactions of the players and public and how the players are motivated to continue doing their best and not succumb to the pressures of selection.

The iconic Adelaide Oval is famous for its flat track with pace and bounce, a ground that most batters find run scoring easier compared to other grounds, but the long straight boundaries will certainly bring in the spinners to play. Australia registered their highest T20I at home on this venue against Sri Lanka in 2019, and the average first-innings score here is around 180. It promises to be run fest if the batters can get their eye in, settle and then press punch.

The average temperature is expected to be around 15°C with cloudy skies and no forecast of rain. We look all set for a complete game of 40 overs.

ENG VS NZ T20 World Cup 2022- Kiwis falter at the Gabba after Buttler heroics

T20 World Cup 2022 – England and New Zealand faced off at the iconic Brisbane Cricket Ground, in what was a high stake and high-octane clash. After a disappointing and surprising performance against their Irish neighbours and a washed-out game against arch rivals Australia, a victory in today’s clash was essential to their keeping their World Cup dream alive.

Match Summary– ENG VS NZ T20 World Cup

After poor outings in the first few games, England’s opening pair finally came to the fore and guided England to their most successful powerplay yet in the tournament, against a bowling attack that boasted of the magical pair: Boult & Southee and the fiery Lockie Ferguson. Alex Hales in particular, raced along to 50 with shots spread across the ground, playing his role to perfection while Buttler batted with caution and attacking at the right moment. England huffed and puffed to daunting target of 180 on the back of a Buttler-Hales masterclass, after New Zealand pulled things back in the death overs.

Devon Conway and Finn Allen needed to attack from the get go in order to make use of the fielding restrictions but Jos Buttler’s aggressive captaincy paved the way for two quick wickets of the openers and the Kiwis had been put on the backfoot. England continued the stronghold and had the game in grasp before a shocking drop by Moeen Ali meant that the centurion Glenn Philips survived to steady the ship with Kane Williamson at the other end. The Kiwis dominated the middle overs, scoring 83 runs in that period and losing just one wicket but Sam Curran and Chris Woakes bowled with beautiful guile and pace to outwit the Kiwi batters and take their team to a dominant and much needed victory that sees them on par with the table toppers at 5 points.

England, Australia and New Zealand are now all tied at 5 points with each having a game in hand and the next few days of the tournament promise mouth-watering clashes, with a semi-final spot and world cup dreams at stake. This tournament just keeps on giving and the cricketing world is on path to witness history.
