The SA20 League is currently underway in South Africa, marking its third season. Several IPL franchises are also part of this league, including the Joburg Super Kings. However, the team has suffered a major setback in the middle of the season as one of their star players has been ruled out due to injury. This player was also a strong contender for selection in his national team for the Champions Trophy, making the situation concerning not just for Joburg Super Kings but also for South Africa.
Gerald Coetzee Ruled Out of SA20 Season
Joburg Super Kings’ fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the ongoing SA20 season due to injury. Coetzee had already missed the recent match against Pretoria Capitals due to a hamstring injury, and now he has been sidelined for the remainder of the tournament.
Meanwhile, South Africa has already announced their squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Initially, Coetzee was not included, as Anrich Nortje was preferred. However, with Nortje being ruled out due to a back injury, Coetzee was expected to be his replacement. But now, his own injury has put his selection in doubt.
South Africa Cricket’s Official Statement
Despite the injury, South Africa Cricket has confirmed that Coetzee remains in contention for the Champions Trophy squad. A final decision on his inclusion will be made in the first week of February, as the ICC’s deadline for final squad submission is February 11.
South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter, confirmed that Coetzee was in the race for a Champions Trophy spot but was initially left out in favor of the more experienced Anrich Nortje. Now, with both Nortje and Coetzee injured, Walter, who is the sole selector, will have to find a suitable replacement for the squad.
