Bangladesh Could Face ICC Sanctions for ‘Unacceptable’ Conduct During India Test

Bangladesh made a strong start in the first Test match against India in Chennai, but by the end of the opening day, they found themselves in a difficult position. The visitors initially reduced India, led by Rohit Sharma, to 34 for 3 and later to 144 for 6. However, a remarkable seventh-wicket partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja rescued the hosts from trouble. By the end of Thursday, India had recovered to 339 for 6, with Ashwin unbeaten on 102 and Jadeja not out on 86.

While Bangladesh has lost their early grip on the game, a bigger issue may now be concerning them, as they fell 10 overs short of the target despite a half-hour extension for bowling. This could lead to a penalty from the International Cricket Council (ICC). This adds to their recent troubles, as just last month, Bangladesh were docked three World Test Championship points and fined 15 percent of their match fee for falling three overs short during their first Test match against Pakistan.

In the ongoing match against India, Bangladesh managed to bowl only 80 overs throughout the day, with 23 overs in the first session, 25 in the second, and 32 in the final session.

“Bangladesh will have bowled less than 80 overs despite the extra half-hour added on. It has to be unacceptable,” commented cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions: “A team will have one (1) World Test Championship competition point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs during the Round Stage.”
