England captain Ben Stokes is facing heavy criticism for his decision to bowl first after winning the toss in the first Test against India. On a bright sunny day at the beautiful Headingley ground in Leeds, with no apparent assistance from the pitch for bowlers, Stokes invited India to bat. Taking full advantage, Team India piled up 359 runs for the loss of just three wickets on Day 1. During this dominating display, Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill both scored centuries. Former England captain Michael Vaughan also criticised Stokes’ decision.
Vaughan, who knows the Leeds venue very well—having played 51 first-class matches there, including four as England captain—said he was “shocked” by Stokes’ call at the toss.
Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, Vaughan said, “I’m old school when it comes to Leeds. If the sun is out and the weather is dry, you bat first. When he said they were bowling, I was shocked. Traditions seem to be gone. You have to make decisions based on the moment, not on what happened years ago.”

Since Stokes became England’s captain in 2022, choosing to bowl first has become a recurring tactic. Out of the nine home Tests where England won the toss under Stokes, they opted to bowl first in eight—and won six of those matches.
Vaughan reiterated, “You always have to make decisions in the moment—not based on what you did years ago or at another time. That doesn’t matter today. If you look at the England team, their strength lies in batting, while the bowling lacks experience. Clearly, Ben went with his gut feeling—and sometimes that does work.”
