Cricket Australia (CA) has unveiled the schedule for the 2025-26 Ashes series, introducing notable changes to the traditional lineup. The series will kick off at Optus Stadium in Perth from November 21-25, followed by a day-night Test at Brisbane’s Gabba from December 4-8, marking the second Test of the series.
The third Test will take place at Adelaide Oval from December 17-21, but unlike previous series, it will be played as a day game instead of the usual day-night format. The iconic Boxing Day Test is set for the MCG from December 26-30, and the fifth and final Test will be held at the SCG from January 4-8.
One of the major changes is Brisbane’s shift from its traditional role as the Ashes opener, a position it has held since 1982-83. Instead, the Gabba will host the second Test under lights. This marks the first time in over 40 years that Brisbane will not start the Ashes series.
Adelaide, which has typically hosted the day-night Ashes Test, will now host the pre-Christmas Test as a day game, part of a new agreement between CA and the South Australian government. This move aims to establish the match as a marquee holiday event, capitalizing on its strong tourism appeal.

The future of Test matches at the Gabba remains uncertain, as redevelopment plans are in place for the stadium ahead of the 2032 Olympics. The upcoming Ashes Test could be the last at the historic venue, with no matches scheduled there for the 2026-27 season and beyond, and the stadium expected to be unavailable by 2030. While the Gabba has previously hosted three day-night Tests, including the West Indies’ notable victory in January 2024, concerns persist over the suitability of the pink ball at the venue, with bowlers expressing frustration over the ball softening during matches, affecting play.
