Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that David Warner has taken permanent retirement from international cricket. This is the reason why his name will not be considered for the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan next year. Warner confirmed last year that the T20 World Cup 2024 would be his last tournament, as he retired from Test cricket in January 2024. His last ODI match was the final of the World Cup 2023. However, he had said several times that he is ready to play in the ICC Champions Trophy if the board wants, but now the Chief Selector has gone ahead of him.
In fact, last month his T20 International career ended with his and the team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 and now a few days ago he wrote on Instagram, “I will continue to play franchise cricket for some time and if I am selected in the team, I am ready to play the Champions Trophy for Australia.” However, Australia’s national selector and former cricketer George Bailey has confirmed that Warner is not in the plans of the Australia management, as we have started preparing for the tournament.
ESPNcricinfo quoted George Bailey as saying, “Our understanding is that David has retired and he should be appreciated for his wonderful career in all three formats. Of course, our plan is that he will not be in Pakistan. You never know when he makes a joke. I think he is just making a little spice. He has had a great career, he should be celebrated. As time goes by, what he has done for Australia and his legacy will be remembered.”
The chief selector further said, “As far as this team is concerned and the journey of change with some different players is going to be exciting in all three formats.” Australia have selected a team for the limited-overs series to be played against Scotland and England, which includes some new and young players. Jake Fraser McGurk, who is being called David Warner’s successor, has also been given a place in the team.
